History
The Arch of Peace and the Tollhouses, designed by Luigi Cagnola in 1806, are icons of Milan. Rebuilt in marble to honor Napoleon, they were completed by the Austrians and inaugurated in 1838. Piazza del Sempione has been the stage for historic events, such as the triumphant entry of Napoleon III and Victor Emmanuel II. Today, they stand as symbols of Milanese history and memory.
The Tollhouses, symmetrical to the Arch of Sempione, are a blend of art and history. Made of granite and stone, they feature decorations that narrate crucial events of the past. The Arch, with its chariot of Peace, symbolizes the greatness of Lombardy-Veneto.
